We haven't added to this blog for quite a while - mainly because Alice has been suffering from a second dose of flu. She'd no sooner felt she was over the first bout, and had gone out to the cinema, when she got hit yet again. Too many coughers in the audience, she reckons. Or people just breathing?
Now she's really fed up with feeling snuffly and feeble, and only struggling out to make visits to the shops to replenish the larder. That's a nice old word, isn't it? We don't actually have one as such, just a fridge and some cupboards.
A good friend suggested some extra Vitamins, like B and D, might help her recovery. What incredibly boring names they have. Something like Banish Blues, or Dance with Dragons would be much more fun! She already takes Creative Cradle and Aspirations not to mention Cold Comfort.
Hee, hee: I enjoyed making those up, though Alice sniffed and was a bit reluctant to type. But she did consent to take a photo to illustrate.
Cheers to Holland & Barrett, who sell our favourite Mrs Crimble's Dutch Apple Cake, too.
What have we been doing meanwhile? Alice is not usually one for sports, either participating or watching, but she does enjoy the Olympic Snowboarding. Possibly because her sons, when young, were keen on the related sport of Skateboarding. See Wikipedia or here for a history and information.
It was invented by American surfers, and there's a great film, Dogtown and Z Boys, about how this came about. They attached rollerskate wheels to a piece of board and snuck into drained swimming pools temporarily abandoned by millionaires. It's got a lot more sophisticated since then!
Alice spent many hours watching the kids at the Livingston Skatepark, and grew to appreciate the grace of the leaps and turns, as well as be on hand for the tumbles and falls. See an impressive video of some experts performing there.
And now you don't have to stay up until 2:00 am to see the Winter Olympics in Korea - the best bits are on the wonderful BBC iPlayer. The commentators say things like, He didn't just land it, he stomped it, finishing with a backside triple cork - three twists and a flip. Don't ask me. But it looked fantastic.
Do click on the compilation image on the right. Alice spent ages getting it to her satisfaction. "See," I said, "You do enjoy doing it!" She grunted back, but did grin a bit, too.
What an amazing and spectacular sport is the Snowboarding. So far they've only had the Slopestyle and Women's Halfpipe, but there's the Snowboard Cross and Big Air still to come. I haven't a clue what they get up to in those, but you could try the links for explanations. We'll just wait and see.
Of course, it sometimes doesn't turn out so well for all the competitors.
But they get up and have another go. Like we try to when life gets us down.
